Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center welcomes people of all faiths to experience the pure beauty of God's creation in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. The sunsets are breathtaking and the sunrises are announced by the calls of the Cactus Wren and Gambel's Quail. The majestic Saguaro Cactus grow to 30 - 50 feet, weigh up to 9 tons and live for 150 - 200 years.
With an elevation of nearly 2,600 feet and surrounded by mountains and amazing desert landscape, the setting is perfect for reflection, discussion, discovery and growth. We are in the process of creating events that range from the Spirituality of the Desert to Illegal Immigration to War & Peace. We welcome your input and partnership for retreats and events that best meet your needs.
Spirit in the Desert is committed to providing quality and meaningful retreats and programs, opportunity for private retreats; and providing a safe and unbiased multi-faith environment for discovery and discourse.
Through the generosity of our original benefactors and several other mission minded friends, Spirit in the Desert has had a rich and meaningful start and looks forward to significant ministry in the future.
The Estrem Center, which is the location of the administrative offices, two conference rooms, a lounge, and exquisite bedrooms, was given, along with the land by Maybelle and Malcolm Estrem in 1992.
Since then, additional property has been purchased and three buildings, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Architects have been built. Click to go to the Facilities Page to learn about the details of these beautiful facilities and the wonderful landscaping.
Spirit in the Desert is related to the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
We are also a member of Oikosnet North America. Oikosnet North America (ONA—formerly NARDA), is a sister organization of the Oikosnet Network, linking regional associations of retreat centers around the world for leadership development, dialogue, and solidarity. ONA is the North American arm of this organization, and brings with it Canadian and U.S. centers, leaders, and people of faith committed to spirituality for global survival, education for global community, and action for global justice.
